The Lake Tahoe season pass dilemma thickened recently with the announcement of the Ikon Pass, the newest “super pass” to hit the ski and snowboard world.
The Ikon Pass is a collaboration of seven industry leaders – Alterra Mountain Company, Aspen Skiing Company, Alta Ski Area, Boyne Resorts, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, POWDR, and Snowbird.
Alterra Mountain Company’s destinations are Steamboat, Winter Park Resort, Squaw Valley Alpine Meadows, Mammoth Mountain, June Mountain, Big Bear Mountain Resort, Stratton, Snowshoe, Tremblant, Blue Mountain, Deer Valley Resort, and CMH Heli-Skiing & Summer Adventures.
Ikon Pass partner destinations are Aspen Snowmass, Copper Mountain Resort, Eldora Mountain Resort, Jackson Hole Mountain Resort, Big Sky Resort, Killington Resort, Sunday River, Sugarloaf, Loon Mountain Resort, Alta Ski Area, and Snowbird.
“The Ikon Pass is a collaboration of like-minded mountain destinations across North America where incredible terrain, unique character and local traditions are celebrated,” said Erik Forsell, Chief Marketing Officer for Alterra Mountain Company. “We’ve curated a community of iconic destinations. We believe this new pass offers tremendous opportunity and appeal to mountain enthusiasts who have a passion for outdoor adventure.”
Just five days after the announcement of the Ikon Pass, Telluride announced that it will be joining Vail Resort’s Epic Pass for 2018-2019. Epic Pass holders will be granted up to seven days of access at Telluride. Epic Local Pass holders, however, will not be eligible for ski days at the resort.
“Being in an alliance is the right move for Telluride now,” says Bill Jensen, Telluride’s CEO. “I think this is a transformational moment in the ski industry.”
As part of its move to the Epic Pass, Telluride will withdraw from the Mountain Collective Pass for next winter. Ikon Pass resorts such as Jackson Hole, Aspen and Snowbird, however, will be remaining within the Mountain Collective.
The Epic Pass currently offers access to Vail, Whistler/Blackcomb, Park City, Heavenly, Kirkwood, Wilmont, Mt Brighton, Arapahoe Basin, Beaver Creek, Breckenridge, Keystone, Northstar, Stowe, Afton Alps and Perisher.
According to a spokesman for Alterra Mountain Company, the Ikon Pass will go on sale in the spring and additional information including access specifics by destination, price, sale date and other pass product details will be announced in the coming weeks. Visit www.ikonpass.com.
